Manchester United are still basking in the glory of their win over Liverpool at Anfield and transfer talk has ramped up for Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils

A momentous victory against Liverpool at Anfield has sent ripples of excitement through the Manchester United fanbase this week.

Harry Maguire continues to bask in widespread acclaim for his match-winning contribution versus the champions. Yet the 84th-minute winner on Merseyside wasn’t the sole element that caught the eye about the £80million man’s display.

Having climbed up to ninth in the Premier League table as a result of their second successive win, United could be set for a successful signing next summer, with the target already expressing enthusiasm for the potential switch.

Here’s all the latest news surrounding Old Trafford as Ruben Amorim’s squad savours their time in the spotlight.

Paul Scholes praises ‘brilliant’ United star

Despite previous difficulties at United, Maguire has transformed into a hero following his dramatic late strike against Liverpool. Scholes was amongst the first to direct acclaim towards the England international after Sunday’s outcome, reports the Mirror.

Speaking on the most recent instalment of ‘The Good, The Bad and the Football’, Scholes told former team-mates Nicky Butt and Steve Bruce: “I was just going to say. I was just going to say that in both boxes, he’s brilliant.

“He heads everything away and he always looks like he’s going to grab you a goal, which ‘Brucey’ will tell you as a centre-half.”

Former United star Bruce agreed with Scholes’ evaluation, describing Maguire as “very, very good”.

Bruce was the one who brought the then-Sheffield United prospect to Hull City in the summer of 2014 for a mere £2.5m, although he would later move for over 30 times that amount five years on.

Ex-Red Devils captain Maguire has faced considerable criticism at United, with many believing he has not lived up to his £80m price tag. However, a game-changing performance at Anfield has reminded both fans and pundits of the player’s potential when he’s at his best.

Striker signing

In other news, reports suggest Barcelona may let Robert Lewandowski leave on a free transfer next summer when his contract ends.

The Catalan club has the option to extend the striker’s contract for another year if they wish, but it’s suggested the 37-year-old could be released due to concerns about his age.

This could be excellent news for United if they see value in signing him, almost 15 years after their initial attempt. And Lewandowski might be open to a move to Old Trafford, having previously been interested when Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign him in 2012.

“To Manchester United I decided and said yes,” he revealed to BBC Sport. “I wanted to join Manchester United to see Alex Ferguson.”

Lewandowski had just completed a stellar season at Borussia Dortmund when United came calling for his services. But it wasn’t to be, as the Black and Yellows retained their prized asset before he eventually made the switch to Bayern Munich.

“They [Dortmund] could not sell me,” he explained. “Because they knew if I stayed they could earn more money, and that I could wait maybe one or two more years. But it is true that I said yes to Manchester United.”

Despite his advancing age, a short-term arrangement for Lewandowski could prove invaluable to emerging striker Benjamin Sesko.

It works in the Red Devils’ favour that the Polish forward, who will be eligible to negotiate a transfer in January, has previously expressed interest in joining United.
