Prince Harry was left seething after the late Queen and her advisors decided that his disgraced uncle, Prince Andrew, could keep his police security
Prince Harry’s biting remarks about his disgraced uncle are now coming back to bite him as Prince Andrew finds himself mired in fresh controversy.
When Meghan first entered the Royal Family following her marriage to Harry, there was a buzz of anticipation – with the Sussexes, alongside Prince William and Princess Kate, quickly being hailed as the ‘Fab Four’.
Yet, away from the public eye, matters weren’t quite as harmonious as they appeared. Whilst Harry and Meghan launched into a charm offensive during their official duties, mastering their public responsibilities with ease, behind the scenes they were battling personal demons, with Meghan subsequently disclosing she faced mental health struggles and even contemplated suicide.
Relationships were also deteriorating with other key royals, with Harry even confessing prior to their departure from the UK that he and his brother were travelling down “different paths”. When they declared their intention to step back from full-time Royal responsibilities, the announcement rocked the entire country.
With the late Queen and her advisers ruling out any ‘half-in, half-out’ arrangement for the pair, numerous privileges of their Royal existence, including their police protection, were promptly stripped away – creating a glaring contrast with the disgraced Prince Andrew, who finds himself once more facing intense examination over the numerous controversies that have engulfed him.
Meghan and Harry faced the same high “threat level” as the late Queen, according to Harry’s memoir, so it was a complete shock to the Duke of Sussex when he was informed that their taxpayer-funded security would be withdrawn in 2020, reports the Mirror.
The couple were in Canada at the time with their young son, Prince Archie, and borders were rapidly closing in an effort to halt the spread of the Covid pandemic. Their location had been disclosed, making the couple feel like ‘sitting ducks’ – but help came from an unexpected quarter.
Hollywood tycoon, Tyler Perry, stepped forward and offered the Sussex family both his private security team and his mansion while they got back on their feet, providing them with a safe refuge.
However, Harry disclosed in his memoir that one of the main reasons he had reassured Meghan that their security would not be removed was the case of his disgraced uncle, Prince Andrew.
Andrew announced on Friday that he will voluntarily relinquish his duke title and his Royal honours, following a 10-minute phone call with his “weary” elder brother, King Charles, despite not having been a working Royal for six years.
The King’s wayward younger brother withdrew from public duty in 2019, after participating in a Newsnight interview discussing allegations of sexual assault made against him by Virginia Giuffre, which he vehemently denies, and his long-standing friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Despite being embroiled in controversy, he maintained his police security. A clearly irate Harry penned in his memoir, “Despite being involved in an embarrassing scandal, accused of having sexually abused a young woman, nobody had suggested removing his security.
“People may have a lot of grievances towards us, but sexual offences weren’t one of them.”
Reports suggest that it wasn’t until 2022 that Andrew’s police security was withdrawn, yet the late Queen continued to foot the bill for his private security.
King Charles initially followed in her footsteps, but reportedly ceased funding this in 2024, in an attempt to coax Andrew into leaving Royal Lodge.
