While Christmas may just be around the corner, for the Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey it’s Christmas every day as he reveals he listens to festive music all year round

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has admitted listening to Christmas songs all year round. It comes as the festive season approaches, meaning many are gearing up for the big day.

Sir Ed, 59 – who was born on Christmas Day 1965 – said it was his ‘guilty pleasure’ listening to festive tunes whenever he fancied. He has even revealed which tracks are his favourite to put on, as he happily croons to some of the biggest Christmas songs ever.

The biggest Christmas hits include Slade’s 1973 hit Merry Xmas Everybody, Wizzard’s I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday – also 1973 – and White Christmas by Bing Crosby in 1942. Others include Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee in 1958), Wham!’s 1984 hit Last Christmas.

Asked to reveal his ‘guiltiest cultural pleasure’, Ed said: “Listening to Christmas music all year round.” However, this was not the only Christmas-related moment to leave an indelible mark on the politician.

When asked about other notable moments about the festive season that are memorable to him, he dropped a huge bombshell. He went on to admit that he was blubbing while watching the Christmas special of Gavin & Stacey last year, which was the most watched show of not just Christmas but the entirety of 2024.

The dad-of-two — who studied philosophy, politics and economics as the appropriately named Jesus College, Oxford — said the festive show was “really emotional”. He said: “The last TV programme that made me cry [was] the Christmas special of Gavin & Stacey when Smithy and Nessa got together.”

Lib Dem leader Sir Ed is incredibly into the festive period, and has even dabbled in the Christmas music scene himself. However, this was for an incredibly personal and touching reason to help highlight the plight of those who are struggling at such an important time.

In 2024, Sir Ed released a Christmas charity single called Love is Enough, featuring the Bath Philharmonia choir. All the money raised from the song — which got to an impressive No. 37 in the charts — went to the Carers Trust and Bath Philharmonia.

Speaking about the song, Sir Ed said: “I hope people listen to this song and download it and are as impressed as I am by the amazing talent of these young carers. I hope people take some time this Christmas to think about this amazing group of people who look after their loved ones from such an early age.

“This time of year is tough for all carers, particularly young ones.” It comes as Sir Ed continues to build on the political strength the Lib Dems have secured following last year’s general election, which saw them secure 72 seats at Westminster.

However, the move has also come at a cost as the Liberal Democrats continue to come under pressure amidst the rise of not just Reform UK, but also the Green Party. Meanwhile, the party is currently sitting at around 14%, according to the latest poll data, putting it as the country’s fourth most popular party.
