Liverpool’s crisis has deepened as a hapless Reds side were beaten by Brentford on Saturday evening as Arne Slot’s shocking tactics backfired again

It’s not full blown panic stations yet for Arne Slot’s Liverpool, but the alarm bells are almost deafening.

Slot’s side have now lost five of their last six games – with Brentford the latest to feast on Liverpool’s wounded carcass. Liverpool, who were once brimming with confidence, look lost at sea.

They’re slipping and sliding down the Premier League table with bitter rivals Manchester United, who handed Liverpool defeat last week, leapfrogging them in the table.

Liverpool look void of belief; within five minutes, Dango Ouattara had put Brentford ahead. Slot’s side weren’t just second best – they were third and fourth.

Kevin Schade doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time, before Milos Kerkez offered a brief lifeline. But Liverpool never found a way back, still looking short of ideas as Brentford wrestled control.

Lady Luck turned her back on the Reds when a free-kick became a penalty, with Igor Thiago rolling the ball past Giorgi Mamardashvili for Brentford’s third.

Slot was scrambling, throwing anything at the wall and hoping it would stick – off came British record signing Florian Wirtz for Joe Gomez, all to try and move Dominik Szoboszlai into midfield.

The questions surrounding Slot’s teams are piling up: will Mohamed Salah rediscover his form? Is Virgil van Dijk showing his age?

And there’s still the biggest question of all – can Slot turn this around?

The Dutchman appears to have unwavering faith in Salah, only dropping him for the win over Eintracht Frankfurt in the week, but it might be time for Liverpool to move on from the Salah era.

The Egyptian did show his class, delightfully taking the ball out of the air and lashing it into the top corner.

Liverpool have slipped down to sixth, out of the Champions League spots, and it could get worse with Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace both in position to leapfrog the Reds.

And it doesn’t get any easier from here for Slot’s men.

There’s the small task of Manchester City on the horizon, who are starting to find their stride.
