Liverpool suffered a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat on Saturday as they lost 3-2 away to Brentford and criticism of Mo Salah and Arne Slot have reached ‘unwarranted levels’, according to journalist Melissa Reddy

Liverpool’s dismal streak continues unabated as they succumbed to a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, this time at the hands of Brentford.

The reigning champions have slipped to sixth place following Saturday’s 3-2 loss, a stark contrast to their position at the top just a fortnight ago.

Brentford raced into a two-goal lead as Mohamed Salah’s third league goal of the season proved to be a mere consolation as the Bees held on to secure all three points.

As the crisis deepens at Liverpool, Daily Star Sport examines the criticism levelled at Salah and the ridicule directed at manager Arne Slot following the defeat.

Mo Salah’s ‘disrespect’ under fire

Despite breaking his goal drought, Salah’s overall performance left much to be desired. The 33 year old has struggled to replicate his record-breaking form from last season, leading to pundits, including Gary Neville, criticising his recent performances.

However, former Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy believes the backlash directed at Salah and Slot has been excessive, reports the Mirror.

Following the west London defeat, the South African journalist took to X to express her views: “It’s beyond bad right now, but there is an unwarranted level of disrespect – aimed at Mo Salah and Arne Slot in particular – plus a rash writing off of signings already.”

Arne Slot’s Brentford mockery

Following a summer of massive investment, few anticipated Liverpool would stumble as dramatically as they have, particularly under their Premier League-winning boss Slot.

Slot appears to have offered justifications for his team’s recent defeats, prompting Brentford to ridicule his post-match comments in a satirical social media post on Saturday. Prior to Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, Slot had criticised the Red Devils for benching Benjamin Sesko after fielding him in earlier fixtures.

He commented: “We’ve seen Sesko play the last three, four, five or six times, but they go to Liverpool they change the line-up. That’s not the first where we’ve faced a team and they’ve done that.”

Slot’s previous remarks appeared to spark Brentford’s X post which stated: “must have been that unchanged team'” in reference to their triumph over the league champions.

Sluggish opening woes

Amongst the problems that have contributed to Liverpool’s woeful streak is their habit of making lethargic starts to matches, allowing various opposing sides to establish early advantages. This trend kicked off at Selhurst Park where Ismaila Sarr’s ninth-minute effort broke the deadlock.

The pattern persisted the following week when Moises Caicedo’s thunderous strike in the 14th minute put Chelsea ahead, before Bryan Mbeumo found the back of the net past Giorgi Mamardashvili merely two minutes into last week’s encounter.

Their dismal early performances carried on at the Gtech Community Stadium as Ouattara’s close-range effort found the target within five minutes of the opening whistle.

These early setbacks have reached historically poor levels for the Reds, with football data editor Michael Reid’s analysis revealing that Liverpool have now shipped goals in the opening 15 minutes of their previous four league fixtures – marking the first occasion such a sequence has happened since January 1996.
