Investing platform Interactive Investor is slashing dealing fees for US and Canadian shares, making it free to trade them from 29 to 31 October.

The offer coincides with major North American companies publishing their quarterly results this week, including Amazon, Meta and Microsoft.

The US central bank, the Federal Reserve, is also set to announce its next interest rate decision on Wednesday, so investors exposed to the US will be watching the market keenly.

Even though Halloween is approaching, investors will be hoping that updates coming from North America are more spectacular than spooky. And free share dealing allows investors to jump on market-moving news without costs nibbling into the value of their pot, enjoying a treat rather than a trick.

That being said, in today’s do-it-yourself investing landscape, free share dealing isn’t anything special. The rise of app-based platforms such as Etoro, Freetrade and Trading 212 has given investors plenty of cost-cutting opportunities – but lower fees come with inevitable trade offs.

Interactive Investor normally charges £3.99 to deal US shares and £9.99 to deal Canadian shares. Until Halloween, you can also get £200 cashback when you open a self-invested personal pension (Sipp) with the platform.

How do dealing fees stack up?

The big, well-established DIY investing platforms – including Fidelity, Hargreaves Lansdown and Interactive Investor – all charge dealing fees in some form.

Interactive Investor’s dealing fees are low compared with other platforms, but it does charge £3.99 for buying and selling funds. Other platforms offer this for free.

Here’s an overview of how much each provider charges for trading:

You should consider the type of investor you are when choosing – or switching – investment platform. Frequent fund dealers might be better off with a platform like Fidelity or Hargreaves Lansdown, while Interactive Investor’s dealing fees are relatively low for UK and US shares.

If you aren’t interested in the bells and whistles these platforms provide, such as investment research and dedicated customer support, you can even nix dealing fees completely with the likes of Etoro*, Trading 212* and Freetrade*.

You’ll need to check whether the choice of investments on offer suits you – for example you can’t invest in funds through Trading 212 – but it’s possible to make the cost of investing very low with these platforms.

If you’re just starting to invest, find out which investing platforms are good for beginners.
