Half of daters prefer to be in a relationship over winter with 39% of them enjoying someone to spend cosy nights indoors with – so you’re running out of time

Three in 10 singletons have been enjoying ‘Try Out Season’ – dating around before settling down with someone for the winter. The relationship trend sees people spend late summer into autumn deciding who they’d like to have as a partner for the colder months.

And as Try Out Season ends and ‘Cuffing Season’ begins, 63% of them are happy with their final picks, according to a poll of 1,000 adults who are actively dating or who’ve been in a relationship for less than six months.

With the typical single mingler letting four different people try and impress them with dates, before moving on. Georgina Bramall at giffgaff , which commissioned the research, said: “Try Out Season is all about experimenting, exploring and being flexible because life’s better when you try new things and meet new people.

“We want to make life easier for daters when it comes to their data and not leave them worrying about spending it all video calling someone who’s not going to be around in a few months’ time.”

The study went on to find 46% of the daters polled prefer to be in a relationship over winter, with 39% of them enjoying someone to spend cosy nights indoors with.

And 31% find it more fun to engage in festive activities when they’re coupled up, while 17% simply want someone because they’re horny. But two thirds (64%) reckon the best relationships are the ones where there is minimal pressure to commit.

As 31% have deliberately stayed single over summer to enjoy more freedom, before settling down when the mercury drops. Nearly a third (32%) believe dating apps make it easier to ‘cuff up’ with someone over winter – although nearly as many (30%) reckon they make it harder.

A third (33%) expect to video call their love interest before meeting in real life, whilst almost one in four (24%) plan to sext, and 14% expect to have phone sex. But more than half (52%) would rather have a short-term winter romance, than no romance at all, according to OnePoll figures.

With the top attributes people are looking for as Try Out Season turns into Cuffing Season being kindness (45%) followed by physical attraction (44%). But having poor hygiene (46%), poor communication (37%), and being rude to waiters (37%) will see Try Outs being left on the Cuffing Season shelf.

With bragging about money (30%) and low effort when it comes to texting (29%) being other turnoffs. Georgina Bramall for giffgaff added: “As people connect and cuff up around the country, it’s clear that the nation can’t afford interruptions when getting to know their options.

“With one in four looking for daters who don’t unexpectedly ghost them, and 17% wanting candidates to text back promptly, there’s never a good time to run out of data.

“So whether you’re dating multiple people in the short-term, or settling down with one person for the long-term, it’s always wise to keep on top of communication. And if you didn’t make it past Try Out season, there’s always next year.”
