Gladiator and former sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey believes his open shirts are helping him become the housewife’s choice for this series

Gladiator Harry Aikines-Aryeetey says his Strictly success is down to randy mums. The former Olympic sprinter, 37, has been bombarded with flirty messages from female fans.

And Harry joked how his young Gladiators’ fanbase were now watching him dance along with their horny mothers. Muscular Harry said: “I have all these postmenopausal mums telling me my Rumba has got them feeling a certain kind of way.

“People were saying it’s the sexiest Rumba they’ve ever seen. The open shirts are helping, so I’ll show-off more pecs. For years I was known as Harry for my sprinting.

“Then all the kids just know me as Gladiators’ Nitro but now I am the ‘Rumba guy’. My medals don’t count for anything anymore. All women care is that my hips don’t lie.

“I now get fan mail from kids who are fans of Gladiators, saying they are now watching Strictly with their mums.”

Despite his sex-symbol status Harry admitted his snake hips and sexy dancing doesn’t come easily. Harry, who last night performed the American Smooth with pro partner Karen Hauer, said: “I find being sexy cringey.

“I never knew how much I would have to act when I signed up for Strictly. I have to look at Karen and pretend she is one of the most delicious treats or desserts out there because that’s the only way I can channel that (sexual) energy.

“I imagine she is a chocolate fondant because I like to bake. I love it when the chocolate just starts to ooze out so that’s what I think of when I’m looking at Karen.”

The former athlete is proving popular with female fans. But the married dad-of-one admitted his five-year-old daughter, Aubreé-Isla, was harder to please.

He joked: “When I go home I have to do the dance with my daughter, that’s now tradition. But she’s not always my biggest fan. She scores some of the other celebs more than me. She scored Ellie a 10 and gave me a seven.”
