Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed he will have his honorary rank of vice-admiral taken off him and his department was ‘working to remove’ the position
Shamed Andy Windsor is set to be stripped of his final military position at the request of King Charles. His big brother has already removed the prince’s royal titles over his links to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Now Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed he will have his honorary rank of vice-admiral taken off him too. He said his department was “working to remove” the position, which Andrew was awarded on his 55th birthday in 2015.
The rank is his last remaining honorary military title since he handed back the others in 2022. Mr Healey said: “In general, the Government’s been guided by the decisions and judgments the King has made. In defence, it’s exactly the same.
“And we’ve seen Andrew surrender the honorary positions he’s had throughout the military, and guided again by the King, we are working now to remove that last remaining title of vice-admiral that he has.”
Andrew spent 22 years in the Royal Navy and served as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War. But Mr Healey said the monarch had made it clear that he must be stripped of the rank in a final humiliation. He said: “This is a move that’s right, it’s a move the King has indicated we should take and we’re working on that at the moment.”
It follows the King’s decision to strip his brother of his peerages and the title of prince on Thursday. Andrew’s Duke of York title has already been removed from the Roll of Peerages.
Meanwhile, it has also emerged he may not get most of the £558,000 compensation for quitting the Royal Lodge because it may have to be spent on repairing the crumbling 30-bed mansion.
The ex-prince was said to be in line for the payoff from the Crown Estate for giving up his lease. However this could be gobbled up on repairs to the stonework and the flat roof which is said to be in danger of collapse.
A royal source has admitted there is “a lot of work that needs doing”, and the cost of repairs is likely to affect the amount of Andrew’s payout.
The Daily Star says
Another day, another humiliation for Andy Windsor. The shamed prince is set to lose his last remaining title of vice-admiral. He had given up the rest of his military honours back in 2022.
And now fed-up big brother Charles is stripping him of his final rank as well. The King has rightly gauged the mood of the nation and acted decisively.
Andy has now lost every title, honour, peerage and cushy privilege he had clung onto for years. For most it has not come soon enough. There is one thing for sure – no one will feel sorry for the disgraced Royal.
He’s been a embarrassment to the monarchy and the nation for years. The next step is for him to clear off from the Royal Lodge where he has been living almost rent free for two decades. And let’s hope we never hear from him again.
