A group of top engineering experts say that artificial intelligence (AI) has brought us closer to innovations once thought impossible and that our lives will soon be unrecognisable
Harry Potter-style invisibility cloaks, flying cars and teleportation are on the brink of becoming a reality, top engineering boffs have confirmed.
A group of experts say AI has brought us “closer to innovations once thought impossible” and life will soon become unrecognisable.
Futurologist Tracey Follows expects we will “see buildings behaving more like living organisms” or “shared dream experiences which turn sleep into an immersive form of entertainment”.
The egghead added: “The further we look ahead into the future, the more extraordinary the possibilities could be.” It comes as boffins mark National Engineering Day on Wednesday (November 5).
Despite their advances, just half of Brits can explain what engineers do and many are clueless about the futuristic work going on behind the scenes. Professor Yang Hao, of Queen Mary University of London, who bends light around objects, said: “The same science that might one day make invisibility cloaks possible is already helping us.”
Meanwhile Professor Alex Clark of Bristol University has teleported light particles from one place to another across long distances, and believes it could be people on the move soon. He said: “We are one step closer to the public’s sci-fi dreams, whether they know it or not.”
And the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Dr Sergi Pallejà Cabré is also shaping the future of flying cars, making their take off and landing quieter so that they become a viable form of transport.
It comes as two in five Brits still only think of building roads or bridges when they hear the word engineer, according to research by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The group’s CEO, Hayaatun Sillem, said: “Nobody can be in any doubt that technology is transforming our world.”
Research earlier this week found that nearly half of adults admit using AI to pick gifts for their partner. Millions are planning that they intend to do so this Christmas. Almost shoppers have kept it a secret from their other half as they take the credit for the bot’s work.
