Much has been made of whether visiting supporters would be allowed to make the trip to Birmingham, with West Midlands Police ruling that the fixture was too high-risk, and as such, Maccabi fans would not be able to attend.

That decision sparked widespread criticism, even from Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

It led to calls for the decision to be overturned and for tickets to be released, but Maccabi announced that they would not take up any of their allocation should fans be allowed to attend, due to “a toxic atmosphere being created which makes the safety of our fans wishing to attend very much in doubt”.

On the pitch, Unai Emery’s Villans are out to right the wrongs of their defeat last time out, as they were stunned by Eredivisie side Go Ahead Eagles.

Before that game, Villa had gone two wins from two, beating Bologna and Feyenoord, but they now find themselves 10th in the league table.

As for Maccabi, the Israeli side are yet to win a game in the league phase proper.

They overcame Dynamo Kyiv in the qualifying play-off to reach the main draw, but a stalemate with PAOK as well as 3-1 and 3-0 defeats at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb and Midtjylland has seen them tumble to 32nd in the table.
