Blur star Alex James has taken a pop at the charts and the bassist reckons it’s a shame that huge stars such as Taylor Swift and Lily Allen dominate the mainstream charts, with a distinct lack of bands in the Top40.

Alex James isn’t impressed with the lack of bands in the charts. The Blur bassist has labelled the Britpop period as being the “golden classic era”, and pointed out that there’s a lack of variety in today’s mainstream charts.

He said: “I had to take my daughter somewhere on Friday and I caught the Top 40 countdown and there’s kind of like, multiple artists have got multiple spots.

“It seems like there’s a smaller and smaller handful of massive brands like Taylor Swift had half of it. She and Lily Allen have got the whole top 10 between them. Going back in the 90s there was so many bands, so many different things happening, and they were all bands as well.”

Alex can’t believe how much time has passed either: “It seems like yesterday when I think about it but it is actually as far back as they go in Back To The Future, it actually, actually is.”

Earlier this year he headlined his own farm when Alex James’ Britpop Classical played Big Feastival. But he’s unsure if they’ll make a return for 2026, Alex told Radio X: “I don’t know two years, could we do it two years in a row? I don’t know, maybe.”

He is taking the collective on a UK tour from March and he’s looking forward to getting away from his Cotswolds farm.

Alex shared: “It’s getting very muddy in the pig world, we actually brought a pig trailer this week, it was a sweet deal! The thing about living on a farm is that the more time you spend there the harder it is to escape.” So I’m actually very excited about jumping on a tour bus again and getting out and about again, I need to.”

The forthcoming tour will kick off with a performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
