Certain coins can be more thrilling than others, especially when they hold significant value. From the UK’s rarest one penny coin to a highly valuable piece worth thousands, collectors are always encouraging Brits to scrutinise their change for any hidden treasures.

Instagram user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 30,900 followers, regularly shares the designs to keep an eye out for. Recently, he alerted his fans to a 50p coin with an ‘unusual mark’ that could make it worth over 90 times its face value.

So, do you have this coin? The 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p was the subject of discussion, with the expert dubbing it a “collector’s gem”. He explained: “Released in 2017 as part of the UK’s ‘Innovations in Science’ series, the Sir Isaac Newton 50p coin celebrates the groundbreaking work of one of history’s greatest scientists.”

The coin enthusiast then shared some key facts about the 50p. Firstly, with only about 1.8 million in circulation, it’s one of the rarest coins of its kind, reports the Mirror.

The reverse design features Aaron West’s depiction of elements from Newton’s Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, including an image of Newton’s reflecting telescope.

As for its worth, in circulation condition it’s valued at just £2.50, while a Brilliant Uncirculated condition coin can fetch around £6. But here’s the exciting part – some of these 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p coins have been found with a dye clash error.

Discussing the defect, the Instagram user explained: “[This] results in extra lines across Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait.

“These error coins are highly sought after by collectors and can be worth significantly more – up to £45 or more, depending on the severity of the error and condition.

“Tip: Always check your change carefully! If you find a 2017 Sir Isaac Newton 50p with unusual markings, it could be a valuable error coin.”

If you reckon your coin might be something a bit special, it’s always wise to get expert opinion.

Professionals can verify whether the piece has genuine value, or if it’s just a quirk. What’s more, they can guide you on its potential selling price online if that’s what you’re considering.
