Sunday trading laws could be relaxed to allow supermarkets facing higher tax bills to open for longer.

Labour is assessing the rules after a backlash over its proposed business rates reforms, which would force thousands of large shops to pay more.

There are no concrete plans to launch a review but it has been discussed by ministers, trade magazine The Grocer reported.

But this alone is likely to do little to pacify the retail sector, which last week told Chancellor Rachel Reeves that a rethink of her business rates reforms should be top of her list.

An industry source said the suggestion Sunday trading laws may be relaxed was simply ‘kite flying’ by the Government.

‘It is vital this doesn’t distract from the one single key issue, which will be making or breaking retail industry, the reform of business rates,’ they added.
