Floats were weaving their way through the town tonight before onlookers said the procession came to an abrupt standstill – people were urged to make way for an ambulance
Shepton Mallet Carnival has reportedly ground to a halt this evening. Floats were weaving their way through the town tonight (Wednesday, November 12) in an illuminated spectacle when onlookers report the procession came to an abrupt standstill.
Officers on motorcycles were spotted navigating past a stationary float that had been spearheading the parade.
Crowds were apparently urged to step aside to make way for an ambulance racing through.
One punter who had turned out for the festivities revealed: “Current status at the front of the procession is that the first cart is stopped, everything is backed up along Charlton Rd and lots of people are running back and forth”, reports Somerset Live.
Another witness confirmed there had been an incident along the route. SomersetLive understands there have been reports someone has fallen from one of the carts in the parade.
According to a spectator in the crowd, the carnival parade has been stopped for around 45 minutes.
He told SomersetLive that two police motorbikes drove one way down the road before passing by the cart and the crowd the way they had come. They then returned with an ambulance.
Newmarket CC is leading the Shepton Mallet carnival parade, a spectator has said. The cart, called Ghost Chickens, has been playing music to keep the onlookers entertained, they added.
