The star of a Netflix show has been shot at an American college and is currently being treated in hospital. Former ‘Last Chance U’ icon John Beam was gunned down at Laney College in Oakland, according to local sources.
On Thursdsay (November 13), police responded to reports of a shooting at the college, with Oakland Fire Department confirming that a man was being treated for a gunshot wound and taken to hospital. The college was placed on lockdown earlier in the day, but the lockdown has since been lifted.
The campus was closed for the rest of the day The Mirror reports, and according to ABC7 News, the man shot and wounded was current Athletic Director Beam. It cannot be confirmed what condition Beam is in.
In a press conference, Acting Oakland Police Chief James Beere said shots fired were first reported just before noon, local time.
Beam previously told Men’s Health: “I told [Netflix] we’re not ‘Last Chance U. We’re your first chance. We’re your Best Chance U. All those kids from the other [seasons] either left school, got kicked out from a four-year school or something.
“Well, that’s not us. You’re the kids who came here for a reason. To better your grades or better your football outlook. We’re your best chance.”
Beam retired from coaching football following the 2024 season. The 66-year-old claimed he still had the energy to coach, but suggested that the evolution of college football dictated his decision to step down.
Last Chance U followed top athletes with difficult pasts turning to junior college football for a last chance at redemption.
