Good Morning Britain viewers were left baffled by a recent news update shared on the early morning ITV breakfast show as they gathered online to share their confusion

Good Morning Britain viewers were left confused by a recent “chilling” news update

Good Morning Britain presenter Ranvir Singh delivered a “chilling” news bulletin on Monday (September 8) as viewers expressed identical reactions.

Throughout the latest broadcast of the popular ITV show, presenters Susanna Reid and Ed Balls brought audiences up to speed with breaking news from across Britain and internationally.

Ranvir handled the remaining news stories of the day, whilst Laura Tobin provided regular meteorological reports.

During a later segment, Ranvir disclosed that an Australian woman found guilty of murdering three elderly in-laws of her former husband using deadly death cap mushrooms has received a life sentence, with a mandatory minimum of 33 years behind bars.

Erin Patterson received her conviction in July for the deaths of three family members and the attempted killing of a fourth during a family gathering in 2023, where she served beef Wellingtons contaminated with lethal death cap mushrooms, reports the Mirror.

“Erin Patterson, who had maintained her innocence throughout the trial, was found guilty of the triple murder and attempted murder of a fourth person in July,” Ranvir reported.

She added: “The judge said she will likely be held in solitary confinement for years to come,” before connecting with correspondent Penny Liersch, who was broadcasting live from Melbourne.

“Erin Patterson, she still maintains her innocence, claiming that it was all a terrible accident that the mushrooms that she foraged made their way into this meal,” Penny reported.

“The judge completely disagreed when handing down his sentence today, noting the level of premeditation.

“Also, that the killer would have known that the victims would suffer long deaths because of the organ failure this type of mushroom induces.”

Penny wrapped up her report by stating: “We are expecting Erin Patterson to lodge an appeal against her conviction. There is now 28 days for her legal team to do that.”

However, the story left some viewers scratching their heads, with one person posting on X (formerly Twitter): “Might be big in Australian news, but why report it here?”.

Another viewer questioned: “GMB……. An Australian woman get life for murder in Australia? UK headline news,” while a third chimed in: “We’re not in Australia.”

On the other hand, some viewers were struck by the gruesome nature of the story, with one commenting: “That’s proper chilling, isn’t it?”.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am
