Scots actor Jack Lowden has been made tipped to take on the role of James Bond. Lowden was recommended for the part of 007 by Saul Metzstein who directed him in the hit TV show Slow Horses.

Glaswegian-Metzstein said Lowden, 35, could easily step into the shoes of the spy who had been immortalised by Sir Sean Connery.

He said: “Jack Lowden would make a fantastic James Bond. He has the physicality but also the comedic touches. He is getting better and better. The key to James Bond is his wit and Jack has that lightness.”

Daniel Craig stepped down from the role in 2021 after starring in five Bond films and there has been speculation over who will replace him. British actors Aaron Taylor-Johnson and James Norton have been rumoured as frontrunners while Irish actor Paul Mescal has also been thrown into the mix.

Lowden grew up in Oxton, Roxburghshire, and studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.

In Slow Horses, the MI5 branch in London where his character River Cartwright works alongside washed-up spies is nicknamed Slough House. Lowden was honoured by Slough Borough Council in recognition of his connections to the Berkshire town.

Slow Horses, which also stars Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas, is based on author Mick Herron’s spy novels which are known as the Slough House series.
