As the temperature drops, it’s important to know how to keep your home warm and safe – but it’s also important to avoid potential damage caused by the cold

It’s crucial for homeowners to prepare and safeguard their properties against potential damage during the chilly months. The plummeting temperatures heighten the risk of household pipes succumbing to the cold, leading them to freeze and burst, which could cause substantial damage to plumbing and heating systems.

While Google might seem like a quick fix, experts from Yell caution against DIY attempts at defrosting pipes as this could lead to bursts – it’s safer to leave this task to seasoned professionals. Thankfully, there are straightforward measures homeowners can take, according to plumbing guru David Doran from Blackstone Plumbing and Heating Ltd.

A key piece of advice is to correctly set your thermostat.

Despite the temptation to ramp up the heating on freezing days, David advises keeping it steady between 18-20C.

Keeping the thermostat consistently at 18 degrees lessens the chance of your pipes icing over, reports the Express.

Many modern heating systems feature a “frost protection” setting designed to maintain your home’s temperature above freezing while conserving energy.

Remember, if you’re planning a trip or looking to save on heating bills during the winter season, it’s wise not to switch off the heating completely.

It’s suggested to drop the temperature to around 15-17C (59-63F) when you’re asleep or out of the house.

This not only conserves energy but also stops your home from becoming too chilly.

You might also think about scheduling regular heating periods throughout the day to keep your pipes cosy and minimise the risk of them freezing over.

Moreover, it’s crucial to have your boiler checked regularly to ensure it’s working at its best, delivering steady heat across your home.

David recommends an annual boiler inspection for safe and efficient operation. Regular servicing can spot leaks, blockages, and confirm the safety of devices, helping to prevent severe issues like gas leaks or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Not only does this boost efficiency and aid in reducing energy bills, but many warranties and insurance policies also mandate yearly servicing.
