Part of the University of Warwick’s halls of residence were evacuated after catching fire on Wednesday night as footage shared on social media showed flames coming through the roof

Warwick University has issued a statement to its students following a fire at one of its accommodation blocks, after footage emerged on social media of huge flames coming from the top of the building.

A section of the University of Warwick’s halls of residence was engulfed in flames on Wednesday night, November 19. The university has confirmed that no injuries were sustained in the blaze, which has since been extinguished.

Social media footage depicts one of the accommodation buildings ablaze, with students gathered outside observing the unfolding scene. The Arthur Vick 1 block caught fire late in the evening, leading to the evacuation of students. West Midlands Fire Service confirmed that eight fire crews and emergency services attended the scene.

In response to the incident, the university is assisting students in finding emergency accommodation. It remains unclear how many students have been affected by the fire and will require temporary rehousing, reports Coventry Live.

A spokesperson for the University stated: “Emergency services were called to a fire on campus at the Arthur Vick 1 residence block on Wednesday night. The fire is now out.

“All students have been evacuated and no injuries have been reported. Those affected are being helped by the university to find alternative forms of emergency accommodation.

“Wellbeing services are providing support to those affected. There will be an ongoing security presence to ensure the safety of students.”

A representative for West Midlands Fire Service stated: “We have eight crews in attendance in the Canley area, Coventry, where they have responded to fire. Please avoid the area, where possible.”

Images and videos of the blaze have been posted across TikTok and X, showing students evacuated outside as huge flames can be seen from the roof of the building. Other posts from students also show fire crews and fire engines actively working at the scene.

Many people posted messages hoping everyone was ok and also offering a place of refuge.

According to The Mirror, a global illuminations procession was held this evening on the campus at one of Warwick’s 60th anniversary events. The university called the event a “dazzling international light procession” which would create a “luminous display” through the heart of the campus.

The event was held from 1.30pm to 7pm and the opening ceremony took place at 5pm before the procession started.
