Ed Sheeran, who is a lifelong Ipswich Town fan, has opened up about his marriage to Cherry Seaborn

Supporters of Hollywood-owned Wrexham AFC might spot pop royalty when they make the trip to take on Ipswich Town in the Championship on Saturday.

Fans of the Welsh side have grown quite used to celebrity sightings at their fixtures since actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac bought their club in 2021. Hugh Jackman, Eva Longoria, Will Ferrell and Channing Tatum are among the stars who have graced the Racecourse Ground in recent times.

However, Ipswich boast an A-list supporter whose star power matches those previously mentioned in the shape of pop sensation Ed Sheeran. Sheeran has been a devoted follower of the Tractor Boys since he was a child and was the front-of-shirt sponsor for both the men’s and women’s sides for the last four seasons.

The singer-songwriter, whose fortune is estimated at £370million, increased his involvement in August 2024 by purchasing a 1.4 per cent shareholding in the club. Sheeran’s investment grants him access to an executive box at Portman Road, where he’s frequently spotted watching games when he’s not touring.

His wife Cherry Seaborn has also been seen accompanying him on numerous occasions. The couple wed in 2019 and are parents to two young children.

Sheeran has previously spoken candidly about married life, offering a glimpse into their relationship. Despite their efforts to maintain privacy, the Shape Of You star has admitted they experience “real conflict” in their marriage.

Speaking at a Q&A session at Spotify HQ, he told supporters that being honest about the challenges of marriage is vital, recognising that life isn’t always plain sailing. Opening up about personal matters, Ed revealed how his relationship has shaped his musical path.

Speaking to the audience he said: “Cherry knows I write about everything – not just the good stuff. Songs like ‘Perfect’ exist, but so do the ones about real conflict. That’s part of any relationship, and I think it’s important to be honest about it.”

He also touched on his songwriting approach, explaining that a track Bono wrote about forgetting his wife’s birthday inspired him to craft a deeply intimate piece for Cherry. Speaking about the song, he lovingly said: “It’s a personal moment that exists only for her.”

Ed also shared how he’s adjusted his timetable to strike a better work-life balance. “In my early career, it was 100 per cent work, 0 per cent personal life. Now it’s 70 per cent family, 30 per cent music. Balance isn’t just healthy – it’s success.”

He added: “When I look back at these years with my family and friends, I want to say: I lived those days and I enjoyed every minute.”

If there’s one person who can relate to Sheeran’s jam-packed diary, then Wrexham co-owner Reynolds is certainly amongst them. Juggling his stellar acting career, countless business ventures and family life with wife Blake Lively and their four children, the Canadian certainly keeps his plate full.

Sheeran and Reynolds have already exchanged verbal jibes ahead of Wrexham’s trip to Ipswich. In footage posted by the Hollywood actor on social media, Sheeran can be seen speaking directly to Reynolds from the stage during his performance at the Time100 Gala in New York.

The clip, filmed shortly before Wrexham clinched their League One promotion in April, shows Sheeran declaring: “Ryan, I think Wrexham are going to get promoted and we’re going to see each other next season. We’ll f*** you up. We will, I’m telling you.”

Reynolds, visible in the crowd alongside his wife, first sends a kiss and crosses his fingers when his cherished club’s promotion prospects are mentioned. But he then playfully acts irritated after hearing Sheeran’s warning, mockingly dismissing his remarks with a wave.

Wrexham head into Saturday’s clash sitting 13th in the Championship, whilst Ipswich occupy 7th position in the standings. The Red Dragons will then welcome Bristol City to the Racecourse for their following match on Wednesday evening.
