Shirlie Kemp has revealed she had concerns when the Spandau Ballet singer auditioned to play 007

Martin Kemp’s wife has revealed she wasn’t keen on the idea of her husband landing the role of James Bond.

The Spandau Ballet legend – who is currently roughing it in the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here jungle – was once considered for the iconic 007 part, but wife Shirlie has confessed she had reservations about the prospect.

Speaking on ITV’s This Morning, she revealed that Martin, now 64, was in his thirties when the opportunity arose, reports the Express.

“I remember him going for the audition,” she recalled. “I was worried, I didn’t know if I wanted my husband to be the next Bond.”

“That’s too much pressure,” she went on. “It’s like, oh my goodness, if he became Bond, what would that mean?

“And all those actresses around him. I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know if I want him to be the next Bond’.”

Shirlie, who tied the knot with Martin back in 1988, also reckoned her husband’s accent might have scuppered his chances of nabbing the role of the suave spy.

“He has got a Cockney accent,” she pointed out. “So I wasn’t sure if he’s… I’ve never heard of Cockney Bond.”

She mentioned that whilst she couldn’t pinpoint exactly when Martin was being considered for the role, she distinctly remembered he was in his 30s at the time.

Shirlie, who shares TV presenter son Roman with Martin, also chatted to This Morning hosts Rochelle Humes and Dermot O’Leary about how her other half was faring in the Australian jungle.

The presenters labelled Martin as the “camp dad”, to which Shirlie responded: “Oh, absolutely, that’s in his nature. You know, he’s not going to pretend to be like that. People will… I think they’ve already said it, you know, Martin, like the father figure.”

She also confessed to finding that she felt “a bit embarrassed” while watching Martin on the programme, explaining: “I’m thinking, what’s he going to say? I feel cringy. And also, the next day, everyone’s going to say, ‘Oh, I heard this, heard that about you’.”

This Morning broadcasts from 10am on ITV during weekdays.
