Samantha Giles has admitted she loves being away from Emmerdale. The actress is best known for playing Bernice Blackstock on the soap but she doesn’t want to keep playing the same role.

She said: “When you become an actor, you don’t do it to have a regular job and stay in the same place.

“You do it to play lots of different roles. To be in a soap long term is actually very unusual for an actor.”

Samantha will be back on Emmerdale next week for just four episodes.

The fan favourite agreed to it because it was such a short stint.

She said: “I don’t think I’m ready for a full blown return. Creatively I want to do other things and you’re not able to do other things when you’re in a soap.

“It’s quite restrictive.”

Now she’s not working full-time on Emmerdale, Samantha is able to take on a raft of projects.

She said: “It’s nice to have freedom. I’m doing quite a few things.

“I’ve been doing children’s series The Football Fantastics, which is coming back for another series next year.

“I’ve also got a film coming out at Christmas called The Secret Santa Project. Also, my final children’s book is coming out towards the end of October and I’ve got a historical fiction and hopefully that will be coming out next year.”

While Samantha loves the freedom of tackling different projects, she loved her brief return to Emmerdale.

She said: “It was just really lovely to be asked to pop back. It fitted in with everything else that I was doing. It was good timing.

“I was nervous. You always get nervous when you care about things.

“But it was lovely to see everybody. It didn’t feel like a job. It felt like I was meeting up with people I used to work with.”
