A much-loved doorman known as ‘Viking’ to party goers has tragically died on the second day of his honeymoon, sparking heartbreak within the community in Sheffield

Family and friends are rallying round after a much-loved doorman known as “Viking” who tragically died on the second day of the romantic holiday.

Stewart Gordon died suddenly at the age of 50 while on his honeymoon to Iceland with his wife Abi, devastating locals who knew the “gentle giant” from his job as a bouncer at an iconic club in Sheffield.

Stewart was well-known to clubbers from his security job at The Leadmill club. Well-wishers are now chipping in to pay for his funeral costs.

More than 160 people have already donated over £4,000 to a GoFundMe appeal. Lots of people have also posted tributes on social media.

Online tributes to Stewart describe him as a “lovely bloke” who had a “heart of gold”. One post praises him as a “legend” and a “gentle giant”.

In a post on GoFundMe, the organiser said: “Stewart Gordon, lovingly known to so many as ‘Viking’, sadly passed away while on his honeymoon at the age of 50.

“Those who knew Stewart will remember his huge heart, his sense of humour, and the way he brought warmth and laughter wherever he went.

“This fundraiser has been created to help support his family during this heart-breaking time to ease the financial burden and to give him the send-off he truly deserves.

“Any donation, no matter how small, will make a difference and is deeply appreciated by all who loved him. Thank you for your kindness, support, and for helping us honour the memory of our Viking.”

The Leadmill club hit the news recently after losing a three-year battle with its landlord.

The iconic Sheffield venue shared its disappointment with a court ruling that led to its closure.

“The ruling means we must vacate the premises within the next three months, marking the end of an era for a venue that has been a cornerstone of the city’s cultural life since 1980.” Following up in a press release, they added it was a “heart-breaking moment” for both the team and “entire Sheffield community”.

They added: “Today’s decision feels like a betrayal of the cultural fabric of our city. We’re truly devastated by this outcome, but we also know hand on heart that we did everything possible to stop the Leadmill being evicted.”

Angry responses to the eviction included a comment from Liam Gallagher, lead singer of the band Oasis, who replied to the news on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a single word: “SCANDALOUS”.
