Mohamed Salah has failed to hit the heights of last season and should be dropped says Wayne Rooney, who reckons Arne Slot must send a strong message to his players
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has told Arne Slop to axe Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah.
The Dutch boss was left facing the flak in the wake of his side’s latest crushing defeat – a 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest. The champions have now lost six of their last seven league games, to slump to 11th in the Premier League table.
Salah failed to register a goal or assist in the defeat to Forest, despite creating one of the Reds’ best chances in the first half for Milos Kerkez. Rooney has again accused Salah of not working hard enough to help his team.
The Egyptian superstar has failed to hit the heights of last season, which saw him voted ‘player of the year’ after topping both the scoring and assist charts.
And the former England and United captain reckons dropping Salah would send a serious message to Slot’s other flops.
He told the Wayne Rooney Show: “If I was Slot, I’d try and make a big decision just so it has an impact on the rest of the team. Salah is not helping them defensively.
“If you’re one of the players who they’ve signed and you’re on the bench and you’ve seen him not running – and again he’s a club legend and everything he’s done for the club – but if you’re on the bench, then what message does that send to you?”
Rooney, meanwhile, reckons the impact of the tragic death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota in a car accident in the summer, could be the reason Slot’s team are struggling.
He added: “They’re going through a hard time, aren’t they? You’ve probably got to look at the effect of what sadly happened to Jota.
“What effect does that have on the players, because that’s his team-mates? That surely has to have an effect.
“But then there’s no excuse for not fighting and not tackling.”
