Mikey Brown and Layla Douglas were both killed in a collision involving two cars on the Lurgan Road in Glenavy in Co Antrim on November 22
Tributes have been paid to two “beautiful lives taken too soon” after a horror crash over the weekend. They have been identified locally as Mikey Brown and Layla Douglas, both in their 20s.
The accident involving a grey Skoda Fabia and a grey Cupra Formentor happened on Lurgan Road in Glenavy, Co Antrim just after 6.25pm on Saturday evening (November 22) . PSNI officers, along with other emergency service crews attended the scene where the two occupants of the Cupra, a man and a woman, were declared dead at the scene.
The driver of the Skoda was taken to hospital for treatment of his injuries, reports Belfast Live. The tragic incident sparked an outpouring of shock on social media over the weekend.
Among those paying tribute was Townland Boxing Club who wrote: “We are truly devastated to hear of the tragic death of young Mikey Brown. Mikey trained in our club many years ago such a lovely kid even after all this time he would stop and have a conversation with you and ask about the club.
“Such a tragic loss for his family. We would like to send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his father Mikey and his mother and sisters and the entire family circle. RIP Mikey.”
Another person expressed their sorrow writing: “God rest these poor young people Mikey Brown and Layla who have sadly passed away in a car crash. Our deepest condolences to all their family, friends and relatives at this devastating time. There are no words to describe the pain and heartbreak.
“It’s a cruel, cruel world, especially coming up to Christmas… two beautiful lives taken far too soon. May they both get the best bed in Heaven, and may God give strength to all who are grieving.”
A third pleaded for prayers stating: “Rip angel. My heart bleeds for the broken hearted families left behind. Please everyone keep the broken hearted in your prayers.”
John Blair, Alliance MLA for South Antrim, revealed that the local community was deeply affected by the tragic news of the crash.
Speaking to Belfast Live on Sunday, he said: “This really is the saddest of news coming from Glenavy today and my thoughts are with the families and friends of the young people who have been casualties of this tragic road traffic accident.”
He added: “Anyone I’ve spoken to from Glenavy today is really shocked and saddened by the news, that there’s a feeling of utmost despair that these things could happen and that our rural roads remain dangerous and that’s the feeling resonating across the community.
“It’s the very worst news any family could receive, especially in the run up to the Christmas period. I know, however, that Glenavy is a very settled and close-knit community and, once that community gets over its own sadness and shock, I have no doubt they will rally round to help others and help each other.”
Sinn Féin councillor for Lisburn and Castlereagh, Gary McCleave, also shared his sympathies: “This is heartbreaking news for the loved ones of both people who lost their lives.
“I want to send my condolences to them at this devastating time. Anyone with information on the crash should contact the PSNI.”
A spokesperson for the PSNI stated: “Enquiries are continuing, and we would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have digital footage which could assist with our investigation, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference number 1121 22/11/25.”
