Anthony Doyle had abused young girls for 13 years and police found hundreds of indecent pictures and videos when he was arrested before he was sentenced to over six years in jail
The husband of a £3million Omaze winner has been jailed for child sex offences that spanned across a total of 13 years. Anthony Doyle, 67, was sentenced to six years and three months after pleading guilty to abusing victims between the ages of seven and 12. Police also uncovered hundreds of indecent pictures and videos.
However, the relatives of some of the victims have slammed his sentence citing the paedophile has been given less time behind bars than he spent abusing and stating that his victims will need counselling for a lot longer period of time than he’ll be in prison.
The sentencing comes after Doyle’s wife, Rose won a £3million dream Cornish home in the Omaze lottery in addition to £100,000 in cash.
Pictures of the couple at the time of the win show them with champagne as they spoke of plans for retirement and spoiling their family.
Grandmother-of-four Rose spoke at the time of the win as a “true miracle”, adding: “Things like this just don’t happen to people like us.”
All that has since been shattered since Doyle’s abuse came to light and Birmingham Crown Court heard his wife of 47 years has instigated divorce proceedings.
His Honour Judge Peter Carr told him: “Your victims will have to live with the effects of what you have done to them for far longer than this court will be able to sentence you to.”
Rose was also arrested alleged sexual offences but police dropped the case against her with no further action.
Doyle, a former gas engineer, was charged with four counts of sexual assault, two counts of voyeurism and one count of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.
He also admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child and one of making indecent images of children. Police had discovered 179 indecent pictures and 137 indecent videos featuring children after Doyle was arrested.
Speaking after his sentence, one family member of a victim lambasted the courts for not delivering “proper sentences”. They said: “He is given less years in prison than what he spent abusing. The courts just don’t seem able to deliver proper sentences.
“His victims will need counselling, it will affect them all their lives and change how they interact with men and yet he’ll be out in a couple of years.
“I don’t think that is a balanced sentence and we all wonder if there are more victims out there.”
Another added: “The public rightly take these crimes very seriously. They talk about stigma but that is not reflected by the courts.
“He will be out when he’s 70 and still have maybe 20 more years of life. His victims will live with what he’s done for ever.”
In mitigation, his defence counsel Harinderpaul Dhami, said he wants to “apologise to the court and to the complainants”.
The lawyer added: “He was in a relationship with his wife for 47 years and divorce proceedings have now been started. He has destroyed everything he held so dear.”
