The son of a former Premier League footballer was arrested for drink driving by armed police in a McDonald’s drive-thru, a court has been told.

Tom Huckerby, the son of Darren Huckerby who played as a striker for Newcastle United and Manchester City, pleaded guilty to drink driving on Friday September 5.

Norwich Magistrates’ Court was informed that Tom Huckerby, 25, registered 63 microgrammes of alcohol when officers arrested him at his VW Polo. The legal limit for drink driving is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

Speaking outside the courtroom, Huckerby revealed that McDonald’s staff on Barrett Road in Norwich rang the police after his mate honked his horn excessively. Huckerby stated that the employees suspected the duo had been drinking and he was taken aback when armed police arrested him on July 18, 2025.

The footballer, who only got his driving licence six months prior, said his first car was suspected of being involved in a firearms offence linked to a previous owner. Magistrates banned Huckerby from driving for 15 months and slapped him with a total fine of £730.

In 2020, Darren Huckerby’s youngest lad, Benjamin Huckerby, then 18, was sentenced to three years in a young offender’s institution for his involvement in a series of city centre thefts.

Benjamin Huckerby, Levi Licorish, and Lucas Philpott all concealed their faces as they approached unsuspecting members of the public near Vue in Norwich. The duo menaced victims with the hammer during these appalling robberies.

One teenager was relieved of a necklace whilst another had an Apple watch snatched in two separate attacks carried out within moments of each other, with a third young person targeted in an unsuccessful robbery attempt.

After the sentencing, Huckerby, who made 203 appearances for the Canaries from 2003 to 2008 and netted 48 goals, released a statement via solicitor Chris Brown, revealing the family felt “incredibly disappointed” by his son’s behaviour.

The statement said: “We made our home in Norwich because we fell in love with the city, county and people when we arrived in 2003.

“I have always tried to pay back some of the welcome by trying to hold the highest standards on and off the pitch, helping the local community when I can and through things like the charitable trust we set up. So as a family we are incredibly disappointed and hurt by Ben’s actions, which go against everything we stand for.”
