Mohamed Salah is being singled out for criticism following Liverpool’s astonishing slump in form that has seen them lose nine of 12 games – and he deserves to be
Mohamed Salah needs to take a long look in the mirror. Because what he will see staring back at him is a footballer in serious danger of ruining his Liverpool legacy.
Not because he is having a poor run of form or failing to influence games. This can happen to the greats, even. But because he is not working hard enough for his team, and is giving off the sort of body language that suggests he doesn’t care. Which is unforgivable.
As PSV Eindhoven celebrated their thumping Champions League win at Anfield, the 33-year-old winger stood there and pulled his shirt over his head. The image painted a picture of someone who is deeply troubled.
Only he knows the reasons for his dramatic fall from grace. Could he be still mourning the death of team-mate and close friend Diogo Jota?
Who knows? But if he is, he needs help and a break from football, until he’s in the right frame of mind to return.
Could he be missing Trent Alexander-Arnold? The two used to form a lethal combination, but Alexander-Arnold chose to join Real Madrid, so Salah needs to get over it.
Or is Salah lacking motivation? He trousered the contract he wanted last season, and has won it all during a stellar time at Anfield.
Nine major trophies, including two Premier League titles and a Champions League. There is nothing left for him to achieve, other than to build on his legend.
But Salah’s legend is now I’m serious danger of being damaged. He looks a fading force, someone at risk of being remembered for Liverpool giving him a £20m deal, but it turning out to be a big mistake. Salah is getting singled out. And so he should be.
He’s the bloke supporters treat like a God. The player who provides the magic when his side need some the most. The ‘Egyptian King’ who rides to the rescue in his hour of need.
But now it is Salah who finds himself in his own hour of need. And his recovery must start with him doing more to help himself.
