The Michie family has been farming in Aberdeenshire since the 18th century. Today, the Michies, with David and Sarah now in charge, are based on land at Lochend of Barra, where they’ve been rearing livestock since 1928. Turkey production started more recently, in the 1950s, and the birds here are fed on oats — in typical Scottish fashion — which are said to give the meat a creamier texture and finish. The methods at Barra are traditional and Wirall, Hockenhull and Devonshire breeds are allowed to roam the Highlands freely, where they eat brassicas, red clover and cereals alongside oats. These are multi-award winning turkeys. Prices start at £97 per bird.
