A bus and car crash caused long delays on the motorway

A crash on a major motorway has caused chaos, with drivers getting out of their cars as they faced long delays. The collision took place on the M5 and involved a bus and a car.

The incident occurred on Thursday night (November, 27) on the M5 Southbound between Wellington and Tiverton. The aftermath of the crash saw fire engines, police and ambulances attend the scene with drivers at standstill for so long they exited their vehicles.

The bus involved in the crash had roughly 35 passengers on board and it has been confirmed that nobody was harmed in the collision. According to National Highways two lanes were blocked due to the collision from junction 26 A38 and junction 27 A361, Somerset Live reports.

There were queues of cars along the motorway alongside roadworks that were already taking place in the area, according to drivers. One driver told Somerset Live: “There’s a crash on the M5 southbound just south of the Wellington junction, in the roadworks area, traffic at a standstill and lots of blue flashing lights”.

They continued to add that many people got out of their cars to move traffic cones from the roadworks so emergency services were able to get through. The driver added: “It’s pretty chaotic.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service sent two fire engines from Wellington and one from Taunton. A spokesperson for the fire service said: “On arrival crews confirmed this collision involved one bus and one car.

“The bus was carrying approximately 35 passengers, who were all checked and were ok. One person was released from the car by fire crews and the incident was left in the hands of the Police, Ambulance and Highway crews who also attended.”

At the time of the incident National Highways warned that delays were expected until 10pm. The M5 is now clear of traffic following the crash.
