A pre-school teacher has been arrested by police after being accused of sharing child abuse images. The woman has now been booked by officers and is awaiting a trial.
Horrific images were found on the teacher’s devices after police arrested the unnamed person in a city in the east of Croatia. It is believed that the children involved in the explicit material are aged between 12 and 14.
Investigations are now underway to find out the motive behind the woman’s actions. Work is also being carried out to find out whether she had uploaded any photos of the kids she cared for in the kindergarten.
Local media outlet 24sata reported the teacher was arrested by Croatian police back in November 4. The exact details of the case have not been made public in order to protect the children involved in the pre-school, as well as those pictured in the criminal photos.
According to the newspaper, it is believed that the woman had been working at the kindergarten for several years when she was detained by investigators. Photos discovered on her devices appeared to show the victims in “inappropriate poses”, with digital receipts alleging the woman sent the photos to other users on websites with known paedophilic content.
A statement from the kindergarten explained the teacher was first reported missing on November 4 after she failed to turn up to work without informing her boss. However, a background check revealed she had given a sick note from her doctor, meaning she was not fit for work.
But it was not until Wednesday (November 26) that the kindergarten learned of the woman’s arrest. They said they received a notification from a court relating to the woman, ordering her to be detained for a month after she was arrested on “reasonable suspicion of committing the criminal offence of introducing children to pornography”.
The woman will be detained until next Thursday (December 4), when a decision will be made on whether to automatically terminate her contract with the school.
The statement added that the woman is currently still on sick leave, but given the notifications from the courts surrounding her potential exploitation of children, the business has already begun the process of firing her. It added: “The kindergarten strictly implements all legally prescribed security checks when employing teachers,” including the requirement to be allowed to work with children.
Police investigating the incident would not comment on the case, due to the sensitive nature of the offences.
