A high-school teacher admitted to having sex with a 15-year-old boy on multiple occasions. Karly Rae, 37, pleaded guilty to child sex offences, having previously denied the allegations for months.
She has since lost her job and has been ordered not to be alone with anyone under the age of 16.
Rae admitted to having sex with the boy on multiple occasions in several locations around Newcastle in New South Wales, Australia, in October last year. Court reports showed that she initially groomed the pupil on social media, via messages on Snapchat and Instagram, according to the Sun.
In one message, she referring to using a ‘toy’, saying: “Maybe we could have one last rendezvous before school goes back. I’ll bring my toy.”
The messages showed that the boy had suggested they delete each other from Snapchat, after she said it was “too tempting” to contact him via the platform.
In response, she messaged: “It’s my fault. I take full responsibility. Do what you want / need.”
Rae was arrested later the same month, but was released on bail. The court heard that she allegedly then tried to contact the victim five times in a two-hour period in the hope of influencing the account he would give in court.
The boy informed his mum about the attempts to contact him, while his cousin, who had also seen the messages, told his parents.
Justice Hament Dhanji said during the hearing: “In the course of those calls, it’s alleged [she] sought to persuade the complainant to give a false version of events.”
The teenager told his mother about these messages.
Rae was later re-arrested for breaching a domestic violence order, but was granted bail again when it emerged she was expecting a baby. The identity of the baby’s father remains unclear, but it is not thought to be the student.
Eight weeks on from giving birth, Rae changed her plea and admitted to the child sex offences. Accompanied by her baby in court, she pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a minor, grooming a child for unlawful sexual activity, possessing child abuse material and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Rae previously claimed she did not know the pupil was underage, despite him being a student at her school.
She is expected to be sentenced in March.
