Teenagers allegedly brawled and spat at police near a Winter Wonderland on Monday evening. Screams were also heard from nearby as cops were called to quell the chaotic scenes, according to witnesses.

While many people will have been out starting their Christmas shopping, Police were called to reports of ‘a large group of youths’ squaring up to each other at the Winter Wonderland in Nottingham. The teens were said to be wearing lanyards similar to those worn by school or college students.

Witnesses said they saw youths spitting at police and videoing the scenes as bedlam erupted in a rainswept street near Old Market Square at around 6pm. People were also heard screaming by the nearby tram stop, with tram services halted for around 40 minutes due to the unfolding mayhem.

Police said two arrests were made, while it is not yet known yet whether anyone was injured. While the incident was unnerving for local shoppers, it is thought to have been dealt with quite quickly, as there was no police cordon in place when Nottinghamshire Live arrived at the scene.

A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said: “Police have arrested two suspects following an incident of disorder in the city centre.

“Officers made the arrests after engaging with a group of youths in Old Market Square around 5.45pm today (Monday 1 December).

“No weapons were seen at any stage and the group was quickly dispersed. The tram service was temporarily affected while the incident was dealt with. Damage to a tram door was also reported.

“A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a Class A drug and a 16-year-old boy was detained on suspicion of obstructing a police officer in the execution of their duty.

“The pair remain in custody while police continue with their inquiries.”

The news comes just two weeks after machete-wielding youths terrorised shoppers in Nottingham City Centre.

Four teenagers on two e-bikes – two of whom were carrying the large blades – confronted another group who were on foot outside the Council House in Old Market Square, according to Nottinghamshire Police.

Officers reached the scene, adjacent to the city’s Winter Wonderland event, within just one minute of receiving the emergency call at 6.15pm on Sunday, November 16.

No injuries were reported and several individuals were searched, but all the suspects had fled the area by the time police arrived.

Officers released CCTV images as they appealed for public assistance in tracking down those responsible.
