Brazen children stealing booze from gravestones sparks council warning

The public have been warned not to leave alcohol at cemeteries by gravestones for lost loved ones – as youngsters are removing the bottles to drink the contents

A local council has been forced to issue a warning after children were caught stealing booze from gravestones.

While some kids might rumage through their parents cupboards to find some alcohol to drink others have taken thiings to all new extremes by stealing bottles from dead strangers graves.

The public have been warned not to leave alcohol at cemeteries for lost loved ones – as youngsters are removing the bottles to drink the contents. Angus Council says there has been several incidents where bottles and cans have been taken from graves in recent weekends when there have been no staff working on site.

The Scottish authority posted a picture of a bottle of Smirnoff and a bottle of Budweiser on social media, and stated: “We all like to remember and pay tribute to our loved ones who have passed, in different ways.

“However, we have to remind visitors to our cemeteries that you cannot leave cans or bottles of alcoholic drinks on gravestones.

“In the past few weeks we have had incidents where children have removed the bottles and have drunk the contents.

“Our staff will regularly remove alcoholic drinks and store them for collection again, however we have no staff working over a weekend, when these incidents occurred.

“Please remember your loved ones and visit their graves by all means, but please do not leave alcoholic drinks where youngsters can get access to them.”
