Max Verstappen is in with a chance of securing an incredible fifth consecutive Formula One drivers’ championship as the 2025 season reaches a thrilling finale at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Dutchman made a slow start to the season by his lofty standards and was left out of the title conversation almost entirely as McLaren pair Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri stormed out in front.

There is work still to do for the reigning champion, but as a four-time grand prix winner in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen could be well-placed to upset Norris again.

How can Max Verstappen win the F1 title?

Unfortunately for Verstappen, his hopes of clinching a fifth F1 drivers’ championship hinge on Norris crumbling under the pressure.

Verstappen must overcome a 12-point margin to the McLaren man, who leads the way with a healthy tally of 408.

His lead is comfortable enough that any podium finish will be enough to secure him the title, leaving Verstappen to make do with just the four championships for now.

If Norris finishes off the podium again, though, the door will open for Verstappen to usurp him.

Verstappen can win the championship with a third consecutive race win, provided Norris finishes no higher than fourth.

If Verstappen crosses the line in second, he would need Norris to totally self-destruct and finish no higher than eighth, with Piastri no higher than third.

A third-place finish could also be enough for Verstappen, but he would need Norris to cross the line in ninth place or worse, with Piastri no higher than second.
