Manchester United are set for a huge match against Manchester City this weekend in the Premier League but they are still busy in terms of transfers
Manchester United are gearing up to face Manchester City this weekend in a huge battle for both struggling teams.
The international break has given Ruben Amorim ample time to devise a strategy for the Manchester Derby following United’s 3-2 victory over Burnley. The timing of the trip across town to the Etihad Stadium could be ideal for the United boss, with Pep Guardiola’s team still smarting from back-to-back losses. However, United have also suffered two defeats this term in league and cup.
City are also grappling with a spate of injuries after defeats to Tottenham and Brighton, giving United a genuine opportunity to secure points on Sunday afternoon – despite their own fitness issues. United have other matters to attend to as well, with the transfer window in the Turkish Super Lig suddenly becoming relevant to the club.
Here’s all the latest news from Old Trafford.
Injury update
As we approach Sunday’s derby, United have a few injury concerns. Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both sustained injuries in the last-gasp victory over Burnley, and their status remains uncertain until Amorim provides an update in his pre-match press conference. However, Cunha has been sharing encouraging updates on social media, reports the Mirror.
Diogo Dalot withdrew from Portugal duty during the international break due to “muscle discomfort”, whilst Lisandro Martinez remains sidelined with a long-term knee injury.
City are in an even worse position, having lost Omar Marmoush to a knee problem picked up whilst representing Egypt, with Phil Foden, Savinho, John Stones and Josko Gvardiol all fitness concerns.
Onana blunder
Andre Onana’s struggles continued during international duty with Cameroon. The keeper is set to join Trabzonspor on loan in the coming days after United’s £18million capture of Senne Lammens, with his confidence at an all-time low.
Onana was clearly culpable for Cape Verde’s decisive goal against Cameroon in their World Cup qualifier, remaining rooted to his line and making Rocha Livramento’s job simple.
While the strike secured Cape Verde’s maiden World Cup qualification, it only highlighted Onana’s current difficulties.
He’s anticipated to finalise his season-long Turkish loan move shortly and will be desperate to rediscover his form in the Super Lig.
Malacia set for exit
United have finally secured a destination for Tyrell Malacia. The surplus defender was part of the summer’s outcasts alongside Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho, but remains the sole member of that group still at the club.
Fortunately for the Red Devils, it appears that Turkish club Eyupspor have stepped in to sign the 26-year-old.
Malacia moved to United from Feyenoord in 2022 for approximately £13m, but has had minimal impact at the club, largely due to injuries.
A move to Elche seemed on the cards, but that deal fell through on deadline day. Eyupspor are now anticipated to finalise the signing before the Turkish transfer window shuts on Friday, marking the end of the departure of Amorim’s surplus players.
