Windsor Park provides the setting for a huge second showdown between the welterweight duo in what is the historic first-ever all-Irish world title fight.
Just over six months have now passed since the chaotic first meeting between the pair, when Donovan was leading on all three judges’ scorecards and had secured a knockdown before being controversially disqualified at the end of the eighth round by referee Marcus McDonnell for punching after the bell – a decision that came after he had already been deducted two points for use of the head and elbow.
It was a decision that left the Limerick southpaw and his camp absolutely incensed as they launched a swift appeal for an immediate rematch, which was granted by the IBF.
But whereas the last fight was a final eliminator for a shot at the IBF world title in the 147-pound division, this time that belt is on the line after being vacated following American star Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis’ move up to super-welterweight earlier this summer.
An extensive undercard at the home of Linfield FC and the Northern Ireland national football teams features the likes of Caoimhin Agyarko and Ishmael Davis plus former Team GB Olympian Pat Brown, while ‘Meatball’ Molly McCann also makes her professional boxing debut after switching sports in the aftermath of her retirement from the UFC earlier this year.
