Giles Wood and Mary Killen have been a part of the Gogglebox family since 2015 and have become firm favourites with viewers – but what do they do when they’re not on the sofa?

Giles Wood and his wife Mary Killen have become Gogglebox darlings since joining the Channel 4 show’s cast in 2015.

The couple also juggle professional careers outside the entertainment world, with Giles having remarkably retired from work at just 21, shortly after meeting Mary.

During one episode of the hit series, Giles commented: “Just as I’m starting to enjoy my retirement” while viewing a documentary about the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, Mary quickly retorted: “What retirement? You haven’t worked first. You retired at 21, so now you can start working – do it in reverse.”

Giles boasts artistic talents and first met Mary whilst they were both studying at Wimbledon Art School, according to the Manchester Evening News, reports the Mirror.

His website shows that the sofa critic trained under British painter and sculptor Maggi Hambling before perfecting his distinctive rural landscapes.

His online portfolio reveals he specialises in interior pieces, delighting in “painting the clutter of people’s lives”.

As a result, Giles has secured work from prominent clients including Henry Keswick, Robert Harris, Erskine Guinness, Robert Hiscox and Richard Ingrams.

On his website, Giles shares: “I like the contemplative aspect – sitting for several days in a room, watching the light change.

“There are as many changes as with a landscape. I always work in oils as they give more depth. The finished painting should offer an insight into the painter as well as the subject.”

Giles has been utilising his Instagram profile, boasting 18.5k followers, to display his breathtaking creations.

Beyond his Gogglebox appearances and crafting beautiful oil masterpieces, Giles’ Instagram biography discloses he also contributes pieces to The Oldie, a monthly publication.

Mary initially encountered Giles whilst pursuing modelling work but later shifted into journalism, penning pieces for prestigious titles such as Tatler.

Her professional path diverges from Giles’ and she’s best known for her position as an advice columnist at The Spectator.

Alongside her regular feature, the Gogglebox personality has penned numerous volumes and regularly appears on a podcast series called Giles and Mary’s Oldie Newsround for The Oldie magazine.

Mary previously fronted Heinz Soup during a 1970s marketing drive and the couple share two children.
