Back to the Future fans have been left in hysterics after they spotted a ‘cheeky’ detail in the third film, which was released 35 years ago, and it’s all to do with a child actor

Back to the Future stands as a beloved 1985 masterpiece featuring young Marty McFly, who finds himself accidentally transported from 1985 to 1955 in a time-travelling contraption created by his quirky mate, Dr Emmett Brown. When he lands in the past, he must ensure his parents fall head over heels once more to guarantee his own existence – or risk discovering that everything he once knew has vanished forever. It becomes a frantic race against time for him, but if you’ve never experienced it but fancy taking the plunge, we won’t reveal any more plot twists here!

The movie proved such a smash hit, topping box office charts in 1985 and earning rave reviews from both critics and audiences, that it spawned two follow-ups – Back to the Future Part 2 in 1989, and Back the Future Part 3 in 1990. The trilogy remains so cherished by viewers that it continues to captivate audiences today.

Even though 35 years have passed since its debut, there’s a hilarious detail that fans are only now noticing in the third instalment, which unfolds in the Wild West.

Posting on Reddit’s Movie Details forum, one cinema enthusiast wrote: “In Back To The Future 3, Doc’s son Verne motions the camera in for a closer look and points at his dangly bits”. They also shared the clip so others could witness it firsthand.

And whilst it certainly looks like Verne, portrayed by Dannel Evans, was indeed gesturing towards his “dangly bits,” there was actually a perfectly valid explanation for this – as it served as a covert signal that the production team would have recognised.

In the comments section, one viewer revealed: “He was signalling to the crew that he had to go to the bathroom. Source: My friend did some editing for a commercial and met Christopher Lloyd, and this was the only thing he wanted to know”.

Another disagreed, arguing it couldn’t be that simple because he “smirked” whilst making the gesture.

However, one Redditor defended this explanation, suggesting: “No idea why the smirk. I can only guess that maybe the kid had accidents in previous shots and the someone told him to do that move if he had to go again, and maybe when he does the finger thing it makes him laugh a little bit in his head”.

“I remember hearing about this years ago, now I can’t watch the end of this movie without thinking about it,” one person admitted.

According to Complexions Dance, the Reddit user’s theory was spot on, occurring around 1 hour and 50 minutes into the film.

The website explains: “Verne raises his right hand, inviting someone closer, then points his index finger down with a mischievous glint”.

While it appeared to be a “cheeky joke,” they revealed the “real story is even funnier” – he was actually “hinting he urgently needed a bathroom break”.

“These kinds of behind-the-scenes quirks often vanish in the whirlwind of the movie’s bigger moments. Most eyes focus on Doc chatting with Marty and Jennifer, unaware that this small slice of authenticity and human spontaneity made the final cut,” they confirmed.

They described it as “a playful reminder that even in iconic films, actors are people with real needs and personalities behind the scenes”.
