Singer Morrissey has axed two US concerts following a “credible threat on his life”. The ex-Smiths frontman, 66, was set to take the stage at venues in Connecticut and Massachusetts but has scrapped both performances as a precautionary measure.

A statement appeared on his official Facebook page on Friday evening, declaring: “In recent days, there has been a credible threat on Morrissey’s life. Out of an abundance of caution for the safety of both the artist and audience, tonight’s engagement at Foxwoods has been cancelled. We appreciate your understanding.”

The musician is still scheduled to perform in Philadelphia next Tuesday.

The British artist rose to prominence during the 1980s as part of The Smiths before carving out a successful solo career.

He’s currently embarking on an extensive tour and recently topped the bill at CityFolk music festival in Ottawa, Canada.

Supporters have rushed to the comments to offer messages of solidarity, reports the Express..

One fan wrote: “I’m very happy they’re taking those precautions. Please stay safe, M and Band.”

Another supporter added: “Omg, stay safe, Morrisey, the band, and fans. I get that a lot of people will be naffed off as the gigs were cancelled. I am honestly gutted for you all, but his safety is a priority, and also the fans attending.”

One heartbroken admirer lamented: “Why?! I finally have a great ticket.”

A devoted follower also expressed disappointment: “Sad-making. My friends and I were looking forward to this.”

One disheartened fan lamented: “Sad the show is cancelled. Sad this is happening to Moz. Sad at the state of the world.”

The cancellation follows an incident a week prior, where a 26-year-old man from Ottawa was arrested and charged with making threats towards Morrissey on the social app Blue Sky. Despite the alleged threat, Morrissey proceeded to perform at the festival.

Festival organisers, however, have refrained from commenting on the incident.

It remains unclear whether Morrissey received additional threats or if the cancellation was a precautionary measure in response to the previously posted social media comments. It has been reported that ticket refunds are being processed automatically.
