Asda has launched its first ever fixed-price meal deal this week, as it battles to revive its fortunes and boost its bottom line.

The new Asda Meal Deal includes a main, snack and drink for £3.74, and is available online and in all stores, including Asda Express.

Asda claimed its meal deal was 12 per cent cheaper than Tesco, which charges £4.25 for their no-loyalty card meal deal.

No loyalty cards are required to access Asda’s £3.74 meal deal, which replaces the supermarket’s three for two deal at Asda’s Food to Go Counters.

Asda shoppers can choose from 132 mains, 336 snacks and 222 drinks included in the meal deal.

You are unlikely to find this number of items in one Asda store, but there will still be a wide selection available.

Products included in the meal deal include, among others, Asda’s chicken and bacon sandwich, apple slices with a toffee dip and branded items like Doritos tangy cheese tortilla grab bag crisps and Coco Cola Zero.

The chain flagged one meal deal combination offering the biggest savings. This included its chicken and bacon triple wrap, toffee apple slices and Starbucks Grande Cup, which would typically cost £7.38.

Asda claimed its new offering was ‘the lowest priced non-membership meal deal on the market with no loyalty cards needed to access the savings.’

The supermarket chain claimed that by using the new deal, Asda customers could save up to 50 per cent in comparison to buying each of the items individually outside of the deal.

Asda’s introduction of its fixed-price meal deal has come at a time when millions of households across Britain struggle with high living costs and taxes.

Food inflation rose to 5.1 per cent in August, up from 4.9 per cent in July, data from the Office for National Statistics this week showed.

Asda said it expected to sell 700,000 meal deals this week and said its most popular main offering was its classic cheese and onion sandwich.

Amy Wotherspoon, the buyer of food to go at Asda said: ‘At Asda, we believe great value should be available to everyone.

‘That’s why we’re launching the new £3.74 Meal Deal that is completely open to all customers – with no app or membership required, and a big range of products to choose from so there’s something for everyone.’

To make the most out of a lunchtime meal deal, try and buy the most expensive items available as part of the deal.

How does Asda’s meal deal compare?

Tesco

Last month, Tesco increased the price of its meal deal from £3.60 to £3.85 for Tesco Clubcard holders and from £4 to £4.25 for shoppers without a Tesco Clubcard. There are around 236 products on offer across Tesco’s standard meal deal.

Tesco’s sandwich, snack and drink deal cost £3 for a decade, before rising in October 2022.

Earlier this month, Tesco said its meal deal ‘remains great value.’

Tesco said some of the most expensive items in its standard meal deal would cost more than £8 if purchased separately.

Tesco also offers a premium meal deal which has gone up from £5 to £5.50 for those with a Clubcard and £6 for those without a loyalty card.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s standard meal deal costs £3.95 and is available online, in Sainsbury’s Local stores, as well as its bigger stores.

The chain increased the cost of its standard meal deal by 20p from £3.75 in June. In July 2024, Sainsbury’s standard meal deal went up from £3.50 to £3.75.

The supermarket chain now charges £5.50 for its more upmarket lunchtime offer, up from £5 previously.

Morrisons

Shoppers with a Morrisons More Card can get the chain’s standard meal deal for £3.60. Without a membership card, the meal deal costs £4.

With over 1,700 stores across Britain, Morrisons shops are often outside of town centres, but are ideal for road trips or suburban pitstops.

Co-op

Cop-op loyalty card members can get the supermarket’s meal deal for £3.50. This includes a main, side and drink. Shoppers without a loyalty card will pay £4 for the same deal.

Co-op has the lowest supermarket meal deal price out of all the supermarkets, so long as you have one of its loyalty cards. It costs £1 to sign up to the chain’s membership scheme.

Waitrose

Waitrose’s standard meal deal costs £5 and includes a main, snack and drink. It is the most expensive supermarket meal deal, but offers good value when you take into account some of the cost of individual items. For example, a Taiko duck poke bowl alone would cost £4.75.

Shoppers do not need to sign up to the Waitrose loyalty scheme to benefit from the meal deal. Customers who do sign up, however, can get a free coffee or tea every day, with no other purchase necessary.

Boots

Boots has a well-known and popular meal deal, even though it is not a supermarket.

At Boots, the cost of a meal deal, including a main snack and drink, is £3.75 with a Boots Advantage card, or £4 without one.
