Jay Slater tragically lost his life as he returned from a music festival in Tenerife last year, but now unearthed texts reveal he bizarrely almost predicted his ending

Unearthed texts from Jay Slater’s phone have shown that they eerily foreshadowed the teenager’s tragic death. It comes as investigations into his passing come to an end, as his mother speaks out on what really happened after plenty of speculation on social media.

Jay, 19, died as he made his way back from a pal’s place after attending a music festival on the Spanish island of Tenerife. With his battery dead, he ventured further into a ravine, before tragically slipping and falling to his death last June.

A huge search and rescue mission was launched by police in both Spain and the UK, with Jay’s body sadly being found three weeks later. It was later ruled that his death was accidental, with no third party influence.

Now, a year on from his death, further details of Jay’s final moments are starting to emerge. This includes the final texts that Jay sent before his phone died, which led to a bizarrely accurate premonition from the Lancashire lad himself.

The Times reported that four months on from Jay’s tragic passing, his personal belongings were returned to his grieving family. This included his mobile phone, which had been searched through as part of the police investigation.

Mum Debbie, still bereft at the thought of losing her darling son, was officially able to retrieve the phone in November, and soon signed into the phone to check for any potential leads on what he could have been up to. It was there she found the last text Jay had ever sent to another person.

Signing into Jay’s Snapchat account, Debbie accidentally allowed for an unsent message to be sent to Jay’s good pal Bradley Geoghegan. The text simply read: “Listen, I’m not going to make it.”

Seemingly shaken as a result of the text he had just received, Bradley reached out to Debbie to let her know the message had only just come through to his phone. As a result, this was the last text that Jay ever sent.

Debbie has since gone on to slam social media for its portrayal of Jay during the search and rescue operation. She insisted that the way that her son was described was totally wrong and people were able to make a mockery out of her misery.

“My son was completely dehumanised,” she said, “all of it was completely wrong. He was just a young lad loving life, who went to Tenerife with his friends to have a good time; somewhere along the line people lost sight of that.”

Ahead of the release of a Channel 4 documentary surrounding Jay’s disappearance and eventual death, Debbie has said she is trying to use the small platform she has to make a difference. She added she is making it to set the record straight and debunk conspiracy theories that claim Jay remains alive and is waiting for the right moment so the family can cash in on fundraisers created in their honour.

Other detractors pointed towards a dark period in Jay’s life that saw him teeter on the edge of becoming a anti-social yob, something that Debbie pleaded was never the case. After being charged with violent disorder after chasing a man with an axe and a machete, Debbie insisted he was reformed.

“It was horrible and embarrassing and he was so, so sorry,” she exclaimed. “People used it to make out he was a machete-wielding maniac; he was nothing like that.”
