Metal icons Gwar staged a mock ‘decapitation’ of a chainsaw wielding Elon Musk at Riot Fest last weekend, before they butchered the US President not long after
Metal band Gwar’s mock “murder of Donald Trump” has sparked further criticism, after the “beheading of Elon Musk”.
In front of a baying crowd of festivalgoers over the weekend at Riot Fest in Chicago, icons Gwar – a band known for their controversial performances – staged a mock execution of the US President. During one of their songs, a member of the band ripped open Trump’s ribcage before a spurt of the fake MAGA man’s blood covered the crowd.
Gwar, a band that likes dressing up as orcs and ogres, are known for their gory live shows – often deploying fake blood and/or semen to explode. Earlier in the set, one of the members had lopped off the head of a chainsaw-wielding Elon Musk mannequin, to further cheers from the audience.
The incident has sparked controversy, with many internet sleuths saying Gwar were “normalising violence”.
One person, aptly named ‘Karen’, wrote on Twitter underneath a clip of the incident: “How is it okay for @gwar to depict The President of the United States as violently bleeding out??? This is not okay.”
But someone treated ‘Karen’s’ outrage with short shrift, arguing they should head to Vladimir Putin’s country if they had an issue. “Why do you conservative cretins hate free speech so much,” the person wrote. “Like god damn go to russia if it offends you. you’ll be safe from freedom of expression there.”
Riot Fest itself even joined in the fierce online debate, urging some critics of Gwar’s performance to “shut the f*** up”.
Earlier Riot Fest responded to a clip of the Musk stunt, writing: “Like I know this is a rage bait engagement farming Twitter account, but ‘GWAR crossed a major line’ is one of the funniest f****** things I’ve ever heard.”
Some fans pointed out the bad “timing” of the band’s skit. “Listen I know they do this to every leader and even did Obama but after what happened with Charlie Kirk last week it’s just r***** timing,” the user wrote.
This year, Green Day and Blink 182 headlined the rock festival in Chicago, Illinois. Rock acts like Jack White and Weezer rounded off the lineup.
Elsewhere over the weekend, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic played to a massive crowd and UK band James performed a jubilant set that resulted in an on-stage dance party during their hit Laid.
