Emma Watson has opened up about the “soul-destroying” experiences she had after finding fame as a child star in the Harry Potter franchise and her decision to step away from the spotlight

Emma Watson was terrified after finding fame.

The actress secured the part of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film franchise when she was just 10-years-old. Now at 35 Emma has admitted that being a child star was both “frightening’ and soul-destroying,” reports the Mirror.

Speaking during an interview with Hollywood Authentic while at Cannes she revealed: “The bottom fell out of the piece, which was actually me and my life. So I needed to go and do some construction work and, if I’m being honest, I was mostly just really afraid and quite scared.”

Following attempts to distance herself from the character of Hermione later in her career, Emma chose to withdraw from the spotlight and pursued Creative Writing at Oxford University.

“I found [promoting films] to be quite soul-destroying but I do very much miss using my skill-set, and I very much miss the art. I just found I got to do so little of the bit that I actually enjoyed.”

Emma’s most recent role was in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of the 1868 novel Little Women. The Barbie filmmaker’s version of Alcott’s tale featured Emma alongside Meryl Streep, Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Laura Dern and Timothée Chalamet.

The film garnered widespread critical acclaim. Film critic David Griffiths from Subculture Entertainment praised it, saying: “Every adaptation of Little Women has something that sets it apart from the others, but few have the sheer emotion and power that we see here with Gerwig’s interpretation,”.

He added: “Here Gerwig uncovers secret layers to the plot that lesser filmmakers would not have noticed, while at the same time she directs one of the most talented younger casts that modern-day cinema has ever seen assembled.

In 2023 during an interview with the Financial Times, Emma explained why she hadn’t taken on any other projects: “I wasn’t very happy, if I’m being honest.”

“I think I felt a bit caged. The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say: ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?'”
