The boss of Watches of Switzerland has said Labour must put scrapping the tourist tax at the top of its list to boost growth.

Britain’s biggest Rolex seller said tourism is ‘nowhere near’ pre-Covid levels due to the tax.

Company chief executive Brian Duffy said: ‘It may be they think that [scrapping] it is not a welcome headline, but we are talking about real jobs, businesses and opportunities to do everything the Government says it wants, such as grow the economy.

‘I really don’t understand why this is not getting consideration and a review.’

More than 500 business leaders have backed The Mail’s campaign to bring back the refund scheme axed in 2021.  The number of people visiting the UK last year was 1 per cent below 2019 levels, at 42.6m.

They spent £32.5billion – 8 per cent less than pre-pandemic – Office for National Statistics data showed last month.
