The USA have been left needing the greatest comeback in Ryder Cup history to deny Luke Donald’s side what would be a first triumph in America since the famous ‘Miracle at Medinah’ in 2012.

All eyes will be on a high-profile showdown between McIlroy and reigning world No1 Scheffler, who has been in uncharacteristically bad form at the event so far after losing matches in all four sessions.

McIlroy, meanwhile, defied abuse from a raucous home crowd to partner Tommy Fleetwood and then Shane Lowry to respective victories on Saturday, having also won with Fleetwood in the Friday foursomes before getting a half with Lowry.

The singles action will begin at 5:02pm BST with one of Europe’s most in-form players Justin Rose battling Ryder Cup rookie Cameron Young, who has helped to earn two of the USA’s points so far.

Second up is Rose’s partner from his inspired win over the star pairing of Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau in Saturday’s fourballs, Fleetwood, who is matched against Justin Thomas.

DeChambeau will face off against Matt Fitzpatrick, while Ludvig Aberg returns to action for Europe against Patrick Cantlay.
