Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway has been the subject of dating rumours in the years since her husband Derek Draper died after contracting long Covid
Kate Garraway has addressed rumours that she’s back on the dating scene. Prior to her stint on Celebrity Traitors, the Good Morning Britain presenter spoke about life following the heartbreaking loss of her husband.
In March 2020, Kate’s husband Derek contracted Covid, leaving Kate as his full-time carer and the family’s main breadwinner. A few years later, Derek sadly passed away.
Since then, Kate has been focusing on raising their two children, Darcey and Billy.
There has been much speculation about whether Kate has returned to the world of dating, but she has now clarified her relationship status. She is not dating – she doesn’t feel ready to.
When quizzed about her love life, Kate found the rumours “hilarious”. “I don’t have Facebook but all my friends tell me there’s loads of stuff about me being in a relationship and having a boyfriend on there,” Kate shared with the media, reports the Mirror.
“On the internet too, one website said, ‘We have everything you need to know about Kate’s new man’. It was an AI mix of Ben Shephard’s face with a man who works with me. I thought it was hilarious.”
She admitted that the speculation made her contemplate dating again, but she realised she wasn’t prepared for it. “This has made me think about it and honestly, I don’t feel as if I can.
“It’s a strange situation, because I wouldn’t like to think I’d spend the rest of my life without love, but also it feels preposterous at the moment to think of being with anyone else.
“What Derek and I loved was our home life and just pottering around, and we had 21 years of that, so mentally I am still in that zone.”
Kate went on to say that she would be open to dating “when the time is right”, but admits she’s unsure about how to navigate it. “I kind of wish I was in my 20s for lots of reasons, particularly when I see my bottom in the mirror! But it feels as though socialising was easier then. I can’t imagine ever going on a dating app. I’m so private.”
However, she insists that time is far off. Her current focus is reconnecting with friends.
“I’m going to start going for drinks with friends and try to have a social life that isn’t based on being a mummy. I just don’t feel mentally ready for more than that.”
Kate will soon appear on Celebrity Traitors. The star-studded spin-off of the popular game show will kick off in October, featuring several household names trying to identify who amongst them is loyal and who is a traitor, aiming to snatch the prize money for themselves.
Joining Kate will be celebrities from across the entertainment industry, including Stephen Fry, Tom Daley, Clare Balding and EastEnders’ Tameka Empson.
