EXCLUSIVE: Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson has said the cast are “campaigning” for the ITV sitcom to return to screens in the near future eight years after the final episode aired on ITV

Sherrie Hewson is “hoping desperately” that ITV sitcom Benidorm makes a comeback to our screens in the coming months.

Fans of the beloved series were filled with anticipation when speculation began circulating earlier this year and show favourite Sherrie has confirmed that the entire cast are “campaigning for it to come back”.

Benidorm enjoyed a successful decade-long run spanning 10 series and 74 episodes before concluding in 2018, chronicling the adventures of various holidaymakers as they descended upon the sun-soaked Solana Resort in the famous Spanish holiday destination.

Discussing a possible revival, Sherrie revealed: “We are all campaigning for it to come back.

“We are hoping desperately that it comes back and we’d love it because we’d get to go back to Benidorm.”, reports the Mirror.

“I love the character Joyce Temple-Savage. Darren Litten wrote that and I thought it was one of the best characters I’ve ever played.

“I would love it to come back. We’ll see, watch this space.

“There isn’t a comedy on ITV at the moment so it needs it to come back.

“I’m waiting to hear and I’d catch the plane today.”

Sherrie believes older television audiences are being dismissed like “coffin dodgers” and argues that more mature individuals deserve greater representation on our screens.

A fresh study titled The Upper Third, commissioned by Freeview broadcaster Great!

TV, has found that over a quarter of viewers feel overlooked by today’s programme makers, despite consuming more television content than any other demographic. Loose Women’s Sherrie, speaking about the campaign, said: “This is a brilliant campaign and long overdue. If you lived in my world, you’d know this is exactly what people want.

“Today’s TV so often chases the young and forgets the rest but for many of us, the joy of great television has always been simple – you just watch a show and you laugh, or you don’t. Funny is funny.

“Look at the adverts on television, you never see older people in adverts unless they’re in a funeral parlour or a cremation or life insurance. It’s like we’re being treated like coffin dodgers or something.”

All episodes of Benidorm are available to watch on ITVX
