The youngster from North Yorkshire was initially rushed to hospital in a critical condition on October 5 – but Cleveland Police has since confirmed the child’s death

A baby boy who was left fighting his for life earlier this week has died, authorities have sadly confirmed. The child was taken to hospital in a critical condition after emergency services were called to a property in Eston, North Yorkshire on Sunday, October 5. Cleveland Police has now said the youngster has since passed away.

Bradley Thomas, 22, appeared in court on Tuesday, October 7, after being charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. Thomas, of Grasmere Road, Redcar, did not enter a plea to the charge during a short hearing at Teesside Magistrates’ Court. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, November 5.

A force spokesperson said today: “A three-month-old baby boy has sadly died after emergency services were called to a property in Eston on Sunday.

“The baby was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly passed away. Our thoughts are with the family of the baby during this very difficult time.

“A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection and is currently remanded.

“The man is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, November 5.”

The tragedy comes after a man who murdered his two-week-old son as he lay in a special care baby unit was last week jailed for life.

Bristol Crown Court heard during the trial that 27-year-old Daniel Gunter caused the fatal injuries which left his Brendon Staddon’s head “crushed” in March last year.

He then left the hospital for a fag while nurses frantically tried to save the little boy’s life.

Mr Justice Swift sentenced Gunter to life imprisonment, ordering him to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison, after learning that Brendon’s injuries were comparable to “akin to a fall from a multi-storey building”.

Elsewhere, on Monday a mum was jailed for drowning her “beautiful” little girl in a pond, convinced the toddler would be “better off without her.”

Teaching assistant Alice Mackey, 42, from Oakhanger, Hampshire, previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility of Annabel in a pond just 300 metres from the family home in Kingsley, Bordon, Hampshire, on September 10, 2023.

Sentencing Mackey at Winchester Crown Court, the judge, Mr Justice Saini, said that she was under the “delusional” belief that “the best way to protect her (Annabel) from a bad mother was to kill her, you falsely believed she was not flourishing under your care and, in fact, was suffering under your care.”
